Here are some basic safety rules that you should always follow. Of course, there will always be a risk but by following those rules, you will reduce the probability to have an accident!
-Do not attempt to learn powerkiting without training (or an experienced flyer showing you the ropes)
-Insure yourself with a third party insurance, such as the BPKA or any other third party powerkiting insurers
-Always wear safety protection (helmet and pads)
-Never fly near power lines, roads, airports, barriers, trees, or any other silly obstacles…
-Never fly in stormy weather
-Never touch the bridles or lines of a kite when under tension (unless you intend to sport a new finger chopping trend)
-Never fly upwind of a group of people
-Always make sure to have at least twice the length of your lines free downwind
-Never over estimate your own ability
-Make sure to know how to use both primary and secondary safety release on your depower kite (or just letting go of handles/bar if you are using a fixed bridle kite, which reminds me, USE KITE KILLERS!)
-Always inspect your kiting equipment before and after each session to prevent any failures, which potentially can occur, resulting in personal/third party injury
-Be always extremely conscientious when flying a powerkite
-Always stabilize your kite once it is landed, i.e. weigh it down so it doesn’t go flying off, chopping up your local MP
-Never fly attached to a fixed point!
-Remember that whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced rider, you are representing Landboarders, Buggiers, Kitesurfers and Powerkiters, so respect other people when flying, even if they are total idiots
If you follow all those rules, you will also maximise your chances to have a great time flying your kites!
