As stupid as it is, jumping is the most important trick you need to know! As a matter of fact, developing a good jumping technique will make your life easier as soon as you start to learn new tricks.

To start jumping, just make sure that you have got enough power to go upwind easily and that the kite supports your body or a part of it when lining. Flying on Handles or on a bar will not have any impact at this stage!

If the above is all understood, then YES, then we can start.

Now, imagine that you are riding on a lovely beach for example. Your left foot is leading, you just need to go a little bit upwind. If everything is ok now, you should now feel that the kite can support your body or parts of it whilst at the top of the wind window. If this is the case, you should be able to jump. Just raise the kite in the wind window between 10 and 11 o'clock to start with and go a bit more upwind. Whilst going upwind, send your kite back to between 12 and 1 o'clock. You will find that it starts pulling you. Try to hold down all the pull by leaning. Your kite should now be at 12 or 1 o'clock (eventually you will find a position that suits you better, some kites differ in where there is max lift but it is usually between the two mentioned parameters). Right now, you just need to let all the power that you have been holding down go explosively for max air. This is known as popping! (it means something ever so slightly different on water) Popping is just doing a small, explosive jump to release all the energy that you have been holding down.

Ok, you are now in the air. Once up there, do not panic, especially if you go higher than expected (easier said than done!). As long as you are under the kite and the lines are under tension, everything is fine. You now need to redirect your kite before landing. To do this, just pull the corresponding handle or side of bar in the direction where you are going. In our case, we were going to the left so we will redirect the kite by just pulling the left handle or left side of the bar. Before landing, just relax and focus on your landing destination. Everything will then go smoothly. Make sure to point your board downwind slightly since you will be traveling downwind a bit. The more downwind you travel, the more you point your board downwind. After a kiteloop, the rider’s board would be pointing completely downwind, but hey, that’s another tutorial! :p Congratulations, you have just done your first jump (or at least visualized it :p)

From now on, you just need to jump over and over again to get a good technique before starting new aerial tricks.
